Student Life

Student Life

Many things make Barcelona a very attractive and safe city to study and live in: its historical and architectural heritage, its cultural activities, its cosmopolitan nature, and its privileged location by the Mediterranean Sea.

Most of UPC schools, departments and facilities are in Barcelona, but there are some in nearby towns, all of them very well connected through the wide network of public transportation.

According to the "World's Best Cities 2023“ ranking, Barcelona is the sixth best city in the world to live, study, work and invest in.

Accommodation

Residence halls are buildings specifically designed to accommodate UPC students and visiting teaching staff. They offer fully furnished rooms for one or two students and all the services you need to feel at home. Managed accommodation refers to apartments with shared services and facilities that offer greater independence and are ideal for shorter stays. Please check in this link to find out location and prices https://www.upc.edu/en/university-services/accommodation.

For accommodation off-campus, we can recommend you two reliable housing platforms that will help you:

These platforms have a wide range of possibilities of housing in Barcelona and surroundings (as in others cities in Europe).

The company BCU Housing can also help you find a room or a flat in Barcelona. You will find the information about it in the following link: https://bcu.cat/en/accommodation-in-barcelona(open in new window).

Costs

In general terms, international students must foresee spending about €1,200 a month on living expenses (accommodation, food, water, electricity, transport, leisure activities, etc.).

One of the most important expenses for an international student is accommodation. You can find rooms from about 400 euros per month in a shared flat, to about 900 euros if you are looking for a student residence. The price will also depend on the location (downtown Barcelona will be more expensive than locations in nearby towns).

For further information, check our website: https://www.upc.edu/sri/en/students/students-mobility-office/incomings/studying-in-upc/cost-of-living-and-prices/cost-of-living-and-prices

International Mobility Office

The OMI (International Mobility Office) provides students with the usual services required by the international community, such as information and advice about mobility calls, language courses, accommodation, foreign bureaucracy and different cultural and social activities of interest for international students.

This office also organises the Orientation Week with the aim to welcome the international students and give them general information about the UPC to make the most of their stay.

FAQs

What is the UPC?

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) is a public institution of higher education and research specialised in the fields of Engineering, Architecture, Technology and Sciences, and one of the leading technical universities in Europe. It has several Campuses in Barcelona and nearby towns.

What can I study at the UPC?

The UPC is specialised in the fields of Engineering, Architecture, Technology and Sciences. You will find all our academic offer here:

https://www.upc.edu/en/bachelors/

https://www.upc.edu/en/masters/

https://doctorat.upc.edu/en/programmes/

How can apply to a Bachelor programme?

You should get Official Recognition of the Upper Secondary School Certificate, unless you hold an International Baccalaureat or you have followed an European official programme. Then, you should take the Upper secondary level examination for university admission. The qualification obtained will allow you to PRE-ENROL through the University Admissions Website (ACCESNET). Once you have been assigned a spot in one of your selected programmes of the UPC (according to your qualifications), you will have to contact the School or Faculty of the UPC where you will study, and they will inform you about dates and procedures.

What are the requirements to apply to a Master programme?

You must hold a Bachelor Degree qualification. If it has been issued by a university in a country outside the EU, the UPC will verify that it corresponds to a level of education equivalent to an official Spanish university degree and that the qualification obtained would provide admission to a master’s degree in the country where awarded.

Please note that specific admission requirements and criteria may be set for given master’s degrees (qualifications, languages, etc). The selection process may also include an examination and an appraisal of the candidate’s CV.

What are the requirements to apply to a PhD programme?

Admission to official doctoral programmes is open to candidates in possession of an official Spanish bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and a master’s degree (or equivalent), provided that they have earned at least 300 ECTS credits over the two programmes of study.  If you are holding a degree from a foreign education system, homologation will not be required, provided it can be shown that your university offers a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish master's degree and that, in the issuing country, individuals holding that degree are eligible for doctoral degree programmes.

When can I apply to a Bachelor?

University pre-enrolment in Catalunya is managed by the the Catalan Government through the website ACCESNET. You will find all the information in this link:

http://universitats.gencat.cat/en/inici/index.html

Please note that due to the academic requirements, you must start checking the calendar from May, for the academic year starting in September.

When can I apply to a Master programme?

Most Master programmes start in september (there are a few starting also in February). You can check the start date of your specific programme here : https://www.upc.edu/en/masters/

For courses starting in September, pre-enrolment opens in February. For courses starting in September, it opens around October. Be aware of the dates showed in the website for every specific programme. Applications are completely on-line.

When can I apply to a Phd programme?

You can apply from September to July, depending on the specific calendar of each doctorate programme. For detailed information, check the website : https://doctorat.upc.edu/en/new-students/admission?set_language=en

Find all the programmes offered here: https://doctorat.upc.edu/en/programmes/research-area-list

Please note that there is a surcharge on the fees for repeated enrolment after unsuccessful completion of the course.

What is the cost of a Master Programme?

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya is a public institution, and fees are approved yearly by the Government.

MASTER’s degrees can have a duration either of 1 year (60 ECTS credits), 1.5 (90 ECTS credits) or 2 years (120 ECTS credits).

Enrolment fees for MASTERS’ degrees for non-EU residents will depend on the study load of each program and other issues.

On average, a non-EU resident should pay between €2,700 and €4,300 for a 60 ECTS program, between €4,050 and €6,450 for a 90 ECTS program, and between €5,400 and €8,600 for a 120 ECTS programme. In the specific case of Erasmus Mundus joint masters, fees are independent and are set by the consortium of universities responsible for organising each programme.

Please note that there is a surcharge on the fees for repeated enrolment after unsuccessful completion of the course.

Find out about fees, grants and financial aid as well as other ways of funding master’s degree study: www.upc.edu/en/masters/fees-grants

Which is the cost of a PhD programme?

Doctorate programmes do not have tuition fees, only tutorship and administrative fees, which do not exceed €600 per academic year. In the specific case of Erasmus Mundus joint doctorates, fees are set by the consortium of universities responsible for organising each program.

Find out about grants and financial aid and other ways of funding doctoral study: www.doctorat.upc.edu/en/grants

Which are the advantages of holding a European Union (EU) passport

If you hold a European Passport you must use it in your application in order to get advantage of the fees for European citizens.
