Student Life
Excellent. Together.
At TU Dresden you are not alone: A student body of about 29,000 students means meeting many new people and studying, learning, and living with them. You will find fellow students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Here, people study together and learn from each other in an interdisciplinary way. All from day 1.
Your Tailored Degree Program
At TU Dresden, you can choose from more than 120 degree programs and complete your studies with a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, Diplom, State Examination or, in some cases, an international double degree.
To ensure that you can always expect good teaching, all study programs are regularly reviewed for quality and developed in a continuous improvement process.
At TU Dresden, cooperation is a top priority: between study programs, with external partners, and international academics. Students are always involved, which is particularly evident in the high practical relevance of our courses.
In addition, TU Dresden is always there for you with many counseling and support services.
Lively Campus
Small cafés, open spaces, student gardens, and a friendly atmosphere—that's the TU Dresden campus. You can travel comfortably and free of charge by bus and train between the individual locations.
TU Dresden also delivers what it promises in terms of technology: Numerous computer workstations and Wi-Fi throughout the campus enable smooth learning and working. Those looking for quiet and collected knowledge will find their place at the Saxon State Library - Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB). It is one of the largest and most efficient academic libraries in Germany. Comfort food for calming nerves: a wide selection of tasty treats at reasonable student prices is available at the 11 refectories and 7 cafeterias of the Studentenwerk Dresden [student union].
If you want to clear your head from the daily grind of studying, you can sign up for a course in one of the more than 40 sports at the Dresden University Sports Center, learn foreign languages for free, or volunteer at one of nearly 100 student clubs and organizations.
Want to learn more? Take a look here at the various campus videos and get to know TU Dresden even better.
University City Dresden
Dresden is considered one of the best cities to live in Germany and is not called the 'Florence on the Elbe' for nothing. The comparatively low rents and cost of living also contribute to this. Students can find affordable housing both at the Studentenwerk Dresden [student union] and on the open housing market.
Dresden is known for its diverse cultural offerings. Visits to cabarets, trendy pubs, museums, theaters, opera and concert halls, cinemas, or music festivals are just as much a possibility as activities in the many sports facilities or the surrounding nature of the Elbe landscape, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, and the Erzgebirge/Ore Mountains. Incidentally, Dresden is considered the unofficial capital of student clubs, and the trendy Neustadt district ensures an exciting nightlife. If you want to get out of Dresden, Berlin, Prague, Leipzig, and Wroclaw are easy to reach.

Applications for TU Dresden are online and usually via uni-assist. Please find the appropriate application platform at https://tu-dresden.de/studium/vor-dem-studium/bewerbung/bewerbungsverfahren
TU Dresden is a member of the “Application Services for International Students” (“Arbeits- und Servicestelle für Internationale Studienbewerbung” uni assist). This means, that applicants with an international school or university certificate must apply for admission to university studies in Germany via uni assist. On behalf of TU Dresden, uni assist evaluates whether the submitted application documents are complete and meet all the requirements for the desired university degree program. If this is the case, the application is forwarded to TU Dresden for a final assessment and the admission decision. There is an application fee of 75€ with uni assist.More info on uni-assist: https://tu-dresden.de/studium/vor-dem-studium/bewerbung/online-bewerbung/bewerbungsverfahren-ueber-uni-assist
It depends on what level you want to study and which subjects; please see here for more info https://tu-dresden.de/studium/vor-dem-studium/bewerbung/bewerbungsfristen
In general, international applicants can apply between April 1st and July 15th for the coming winter semester within the same year. Some English taught Master’s programs have an earlier deadline of May 31st. Please check the link for deadlines for the summer semester and for prep semesters.
Apart from your relevant secondary school leaving certificate (equivalent to the German Abitur, please check here: http://anabin.kmk.org/ or here https://www.daad.de/deutschland/nach-deutschland/voraussetzungen/en/57293-daad-database-on-admission-requirements ) or your first university degree, you’ll need to prove your knowledge of German for all German taught programs (i.e. all undergrad programs and most master’s programs). In order to apply for English taught master’s programs, you’ll need to prove your knowledge of English with suitable test certificates (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.). Please see here for more info about the necessary documents https://tu-dresden.de/studium/vor-dem-studium/bewerbung/bewerbungsverfahren/bewerbungsverfahren-ueber-uni-assist
That depends on the certificate and after how many years of school you have graduated. To find out whether your certificate is deemed equivalent to the German Abitur, please check here: http://anabin.kmk.org/ or here https://www.daad.de/deutschland/nach-deutschland/voraussetzungen/en/57293-daad-database-on-admission-requirements or ask us at TU Dresden directly.
If you graduated with an IB Diploma, the following rules apply: https://www.kmk.org/fileadmin/Dateien/pdf/ZAB/Hochschulzugang_Beschluesse_der_KMK/283_Vereinb_Anerkenn_Int_Baccalaureate_Diploma-2022-03-24_Liste1-2023-03-01_Liste2-2023-03-01_DE.pdf
If you are interested in studying at TUD but need to attend Studienkolleg, you can still apply to TU Dresden if you are at least German level B1. If you fulfil the admission criteria for your chosen program, TU Dresden will delegate you to the state Studienkolleg in Leipzig and the private Studienkolleg in Dresden (TUDIAS) and you can take both their entry tests to improve your chances. Studienkolleg will take 2 semesters and will prepare you for the final assessment exam including German language.
Please note that the private Studienkolleg in Dresden charges tuition fees of approx. 7500€ for two semesters.
More info at https://tu-dresden.de/studium/vor-dem-studium/internationales/studienvorbereitung
TU Dresden does not charge tuition fees. All students pay a semester contribution of roughly 290€ per semester (= 6 months) to support student services (cafeterias, student unions, etc.) and students’ representatives (StuRa, etc.), which includes a ticket for public transport in Dresden and regional trains in Germany ("Deutschlandticket") and the use of a rental bike in the city (mobibike).
For a German taught program, you need a German C1 certificate in order to be enrolled (for example TestDAF 4x4, DSH2, Goethe C2, etc.).
For an English taught master’s program, you need to prove your English knowledge with a TOEFL, IELTS or similar test. The results usually refer to B2+/C1 (e.g. IELTS, Level 5.5-7.0 or TOEFL 79+ internet based)
Please check http://tu-dresden.de/sins for each individual program as there are slight differences between the programs.
Students of TUD, usually rent either a room or apartment from the Studentenwerk Dresden (http://www.studentenwerk-dresden.de/wohnen/wohnheimkatalog/) which is open for all TUD students with an admission letter, or they choose to rent a flat or a room in a flatshare on the private market. TUD itself does not own any dorms. This is typical for all German universities as we have Studentenwerke in Germany that take care of the housing.
Living in Dresden is relatively cheap compared to other big German cities. At 850€--900€/month Dresden offers high quality of living at moderate costs.
Rent is usually between 200-400€ per month depending on the size of the room/apartment.
Please note that if you need to apply for a visa to study and live in Germany, you will need to prove your financial means. There are various ways to do that, for example if you receive a scholarship during your stay or you can open a blocked account with a bank. The amount you need to deposit in this account is 11.900€ per year.
Yes, if you are not an EU national, you usually need to apply for a national visa with the German embassy in your home country. Please do not enter Germany without visa (e.g. as a tourist) as you cannot apply for a national visa here.
As a public university without tuition fees, TU Dresden does not have the finances to fund scholarships on a wider scale. There are some special programs for example for some Master’s programs, e.g. like Hydro Science and Engineering, Vocational Education, Textile Machinery or Tropical Forestry. Information on scholarships for applicants and students from abroad is available at: https://tu-dresden.de/studium/vor-dem-studium/internationales/stipendien?set_language=en
In general, we also recommend checking in the funding database of the DAAD: https://www.funding-guide.de
Usually students from Non-EU countries are allowed to work 140 days / 280 half days per year. Jobs as a student assistant are even possible without this restriction or prior approval by the foreign residents' authorities. There are several job opportunities for students, e.g. there is a student group that has a website with job offers as well, see: https://stav-dresden.de/
There is ample opportunity in Dresden to work a student job, e.g. student assistants in the faculty, in bigger research organisations (Fraunhofer, Max-Planck, etc.), in small companies, jobs in cafés/restaurants, as language tutors…
The Dresden University Sports Center at TU Dresden has a big portfolio of courses to offer; in regular times there are usually about 800 courses taking place each semester, including all kinds of ball games (volleyball, basketball, soccer/football, badminton,…), swimming, trend sports (Quidditch, Ultimate Frisbee, Trampoline, Surfing…), dance classes (modern, standard, oriental,…), Yoga, or even mountain climbing in Saxon Switzerland or rowing on the Elbe river. Costs are minimal for each term and depend on the chosen course. https://tu-dresden.de/sport
Yes, as an enrolled student at TU Dresden you have a certain budget for free language courses. At our language center, you can learn more than 15 languages and as an international student, you might want to improve you German. Courses range from absolute beginner’s classes to academic/scientific language advanced courses.

There are many other activities available at TU Dresden in order for you to make new friends, try and learn new things or follow your passion. We have a professional orchestra, choir and folk dance group. There is a students’ cinema and radio team, several buddy programs and also a cultural office that organizes excursions each semester. Many faculties also have subject specific clubs, like a robotics team, the Elbflorace team (building racecars) or theater groups.
Of course, this depends on your chosen degree programs and on what you want to achieve. Especially in the engineering and sciences programs, many students are very highly sought after, sometimes even before they have graduated. There are usually many career fairs at TUD where students can meet potential employers, also from big companies (Siemens, Bosch, Thyssen Krupp, etc.) and several big players have offices, branches or plants in Dresden (Infineon, Global foundries, GlaxoSmith Kline, Huawei, Bosch, Siemens, Volkswagen, TSMC, etc.)
TU Dresden has a Career Service that offers special workshops and counselling to international students.
TUD offers only few PhD programs as most of our PhD students do an independent research project with a supervisor and are employed by TU Dresden. You can find a list of all PhD programs at TU Dresden at https://tu-dresden.de/forschung-transfer/wissenschaftlicher-nachwuchs/promotion/strukturierte-promotionsprogramme-der-tud-und-ihrer-partnerinstitutionen
